Day 5 • Girdwood to Healy • 285 mi
I woke up not really feeling it today. We had a long haul to do, along with some chores as we passed through Anchorage for the last time. The day turned out okay in the end, though!
To start, we headed up the Alyeska Tram in Girdwood.
Rising 2,000 ft in 6 minutes, we got some great views out over Turnagain Arm (the water).
Also, apparently I haven't explained who "we" are! My mother is joining me for the first 10 days or so, but then she heads back to CA and I venture on solo.
Next was Alaska Hwy 1 up to Anchorage, where we provisioned up. Boring. No picture.
Now we rode up Parks Highway toward Denali National Park. Beautiful country, but I was pushing for mileage, so I didn't get many pictures.
My chase car got some, though!
Coming up through Cantwell, things got a little moist—water on the road and humidity up near 100%. Combined with a "pavement break" (Alaska DOT slang for "we broke it but we'll fix it soon promise") and some large trucks kicking up dust, visibility became... limited.
But we made it! I screwed up the B&B reservations, but looks like the owner will make do for us.
All in all, about 7 hours on the bike today. Still not sure how...
Tomorrow we head into Denali National Park for three nights. I'm guessing there'll be little to no cell reception, so I will post again when possible!
